Winter/Spring
Our Winter/Spring season is considered one season, and is the busiest for CJRC! We run our competitive season for athletes in Grades 8-12 along with our non-competitive training program for those in Grades 6-12.
Competitive Team: This program starts in early December and runs through mid-May with regattas usually starting in late March. There is a 2-week tryout period for novices and those new to CJRC. Select athletes will be chosen to compete in the USRowing Youth National Championships in June, held in Sarasota, FL. Attendance at practice is mandatory! Rowing with CJRC's Competitive Team is a 6 day/week commitment. Practices are held during the winter months at our indoor training facility, with emphasis on erging and weightlifting. Athletes transition to back the water in March.
Options for registering for our Competitive Team:
- Full Program (Winter/Spring): The vast majority of our athletes register for this program. This properly prepares them for the racing season in the spring.
- Spring Only: This is only for select athletes who are involved in another high-intensity winter sport (i.e. swimming). We encourage these athletes to come to as many practices as possible during the winter to "check-in" with the coaches. Your athlete MUST be approved by the Program Director to take this route; it is only for special circumstances. You must contact mrc.coopercommodores@gmail.com to discuss this possibility.
Developmental Team Programs: We offer non-competitive Winter and Spring programs for middle and high school athletes (Grades 6-12) who want to learn or improve their rowing/coxing skills -- love of the sport while learning is the main focus! Your athlete can join the DevTeam at the recommendation of a CJRC coach, or without previous rowing experience. While great athletes come in all shapes and sizes, our rowers typically share exceptional height, power, and athleticism, physical strength and mental toughness. Please note that membership on the Developmental Team does not guarantee progression onto the Competitive Racing Team.
