HISTORY OF THE COOPER CUP

History

History

Founded in 2005 by dedicated SJRC volunteers passionate about rowing and outdoor enjoyment for future generations, the Cooper Cup was created to provide accessible local sculling and club racing in South Jersey. The event grew rapidly, hosting nearly 1,800 competitors. Its strong emphasis on sculling is celebrated through the William and Sarah Cooper 4X trophy.

Originally known as the William and Sarah Cooper Cup Regatta, the event honors the Cooper family’s deep ties to the river—once called “Cooper Creek”—and their lasting influence on the region. In the early 1700s, the family operated vital ferry services across the Delaware River from Cooper’s Ferry (now central Camden), a primary crossing point between Philadelphia and West Jersey. These ferries supported passenger travel, commerce, and communication, playing a key role in regional development. Benjamin Franklin famously referenced landing at Cooper’s Creek in 1723 during his journey to Philadelphia.

Cooper River Park, managed by the Camden County Board of Commissioners, receives essential funding for maintenance, upgrades, and events. Commissioner Jeffrey L. Nash has long called the park the county’s “crown jewel,” championing strategic investments in premier regattas such as the Cooper Cup and Dad Vail to boost tourism and community recreation. These ongoing commitments and partnerships keep the venue an elite-level course for junior, collegiate, and local rowers alike. We are grateful for the Board’s dedication to preserving this exceptional space for everyone.

The regatta features sculling (1x, 2x, 4x) and sweep (4+, 8+) events for men and women, spanning novice to varsity levels. Races typically follow a time-trial-to-finals format. In 2026, the 8+ (coxed eight) events are gaining special prominence, offering excellent preparation for collegiate competitions including the Dad Vail Regatta and Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) events.

Today, the Cooper Cup remains a cornerstone of Northeast junior rowing. It provides a welcoming yet competitive platform on a world-class 2,000-meter course while nurturing local talent. In the past, the regatta has drawn more than 65 clubs, over 600 entries, and 10,000+ spectators. Proudly hosted by the Cooper Junior Rowing Club, which was formed by the merger of the Moorestown Rowing Club and the South Jersey Rowing Club.
